The Swedish CAP association

The Swedish CAP association ( Svenska Föreningen för Barn- och Ungdomspsykiatri) is part of two organisations – we are a specialist association in the Swedish Medical Association and a section of the Swedish Association of Medicine.

The SMA is the union and professional organisation for medical practitioners. Important issues dealt with include doctors’ work environment, salaries, working hours, training and research. The SMA also has a key role to play in influencing the development of healthcare in Sweden. Over 90 per cent of Sweden’s doctors belong to the SMA.

The Swedish association of Medicine is the scientific organisation of the Swedish medical profession. Its aim is to promote research, education and development in the healthcare sector and it is responsible, with the support of its sections, for the advanced training of Swedish physicians.

Our Swedish CAP association organises specialists in Child and Youth Psychiatry as well as doctors under specialist training. Other professions can apply for membership, but only doctors can be part of the board.

The board consists of 8 members, president and vice president included and all are elected by the general assembly.

The Swedish CAP association has around 400 members, 65 % female. The average age is rather high. We estimate that 50-100 members will retire during the next 5 years. Recruitment of new doctors to the speciality is a crucial task for our association.

In the work connected with the union (SMA) we take part of work in different groups and associations, engage in questions concerning work environment, education, training and responsibilities for doctors. We also serve as a referral body on different subjects and answer legislation proposals in the mental health field and other areas.

Once a year at least we meet with all the operational managers/ heads of Child and Youth Psychiatric Clinics in Sweden.

The CAP association has one section for Child neuropsychiatry, consisting of child psychiatrists, paediatricians/ child neurologists and school doctors.

Each spring an annual national 2- day CAP-meeting( BUP:s vårmöte) for child psychiatrists and allied professions takes place, usually at one of our University clinics. Every autumn we have one day with a scientific programme in connection with the annual general meeting arranged by the Swedish association of Medicine.

We regularly meet with the professors of Child and Youth Psychiatry and with our directors of studies in the six regions of Sweden. Lately we have engaged in establishing National Guidelines. So far they exist for: Suicidal children and adolescents and Conduct Disorder in children and adolescents

We network with other Swedish organisations, such as the Swedish Psychiatric Association, the Paediatric Association and Barnombudsmannen to mention a few.
We publish a periodical together with all psychiatric associations in Sweden, called “Tidskriften för Svensk Psykiatri”, distributed to all our members in Sweden.
We are represented in the following international organisations:
